Before you pull a transmission make sure you do some research to understand the work procedure because you can get yourself in a mess and if you don't have the equipment you'll be in trouble. You can also decide whether or not you want to put in the work do it and figure out the expense to pull and replace a transmission.
Rebuilding the transmission.
There are some special tools required to rebuild a Transmisson. Special pliers for the snap rings on certain transmission, clearances that must be measured and of course the case if there is a hairline crack it can throw the entire transmission off. In other words, if you rebuild it, it might not have second gear, or the transmission may shift hard or not shift at all. Also, it should be noted that if a transmission case is overheated it can change the pressure inside and not work.
A remanufacture transmission.
Opting for a remanufactured unit is an option. You can save time but it but cost a little bit more. Some vehicles are more prone to transmission failure so be careful what you buy. Also, when you buy a remanufactured unit. don't be cheap on buying the transmission because if you cut corners and not spend the money you can be looking at the same problem in 6 months to a year. Try to find a good remanufacturer or you can go to the dealer and look at buying a factor transmission. Or a doo aftermarket company like monster transmissions.
In conclusion.
Make sure the car is worth putting a transmission and has been maintained well the last thing you need is to deal with an engine or differential or transfer case problem. Also, if the body of the car is rusty it can make the job a lot harder because everything is seized and hard to free up. It would require a lot of time and effort and a torch and penetrating oil and sometimes

shocking the bolts or nut with a punch and hammer.
